Beks - Posted 1/25/07
Making our way over the cobblestone streets in historic downtown Fulton I was looking forward to my dinner at Beks. I’ve heard great things about Beks and I was hoping not to be disappointed.
On a street dotted with antique shops and shoe stores Beks
found it’s home in an historic 3-story building where old meets
new. Since Garry and Rebekah opened Beks Valentines Day of 2004 it has
been a favorite of young and old alike. Much of the building has been
restored to its original 1902 style. It’s a great look that stands
out against any restaurant in Fulton, Columbia or Mid Missouri.
When you first walk into Beks you’ll notice a few things. The huge wine bar to your right crawls up the brick wall almost joining the ceiling. Looking to the left you see a row of high tables that makes it’s way to stairs granting access to Beks loft. The hole in the ceiling provides a glance to the 3rd story dining area where Beks can host private parties. The easy atmosphere is amazing, and a cozy feeling is found in every detail at Beks. From the wood floors, historic black and white photos, and the great Jazz music being played it’s hard not to fall in love with Beks right away. At least wait for the food.
Beks is a coffee shop and the only place in Callaway County to find Startbucks coffee. They also open up at 6am to help with your coffee fix. Beks’ wine bar will impress you by just one look at the menu. Over 50 wines will absorb your attention as you try to choose a glass, or a bottle to take home. Beks also offers a vast array of microbrews and imports including the Purple Haze, but we’ll get to that later.
Beks’ menu is full of things that sound delicious. Chipotle
Chicken Sandwich, Filet Mignon, Pepper Steak Salad, Autumn Baked Brie
will have your mouth watering before you even order. You don’t
have to be starving when you get here but it would help. My dining sidekick
was born and raised in Fulton and she told how the Parmesan Artichoke
Dip would “show me stars.” She might have exaggerated just
bit but it was very good. Beks serves up this favorite with crispy pita
triangles encasing a warm bowl of Artichoke dip. If your not careful
this will become your meal for the night, lets just say I was a double-dipper
and proud of it.
My
dinner at Beks was order and brought out just in time. Wonderfully plated
the Salmon was coupled with a side of potatoes and a sprinkling of herbs.
The Seared Salmon is an 8oz. Atlantic filet topped with a bleu cheese
jalapeno compound butter. The Salmon is precisely seared and flakes
apart with just a tap of the fork. Beks own compound butter adds a smooth
texture, taste, and a mild zing to an outstanding piece of fish. The
Chipotle Chicken Pasta also found itself under our hungry eyes. Served
up in a fantastic triangular bowl the pasta has a laid back spice that
evenly stretches across your tongue.
At Beks you have a nice array of desserts from cakes, pies, and even Flan. Go with that if you want. We went with the Purple Haze. A stunning micro brew mixing in the tart taste of raspberry. Purple Haze can be hard to find but your searching will be rewarded. The clean, fruity flavor comes form adding Raspberry puree after the brew is filtered. You can have your cakes and pies if you want but nothing beats my night at Beks with a Purple Haze desert.
When all is said and done Beks is a great place. Great food, drinks, music and atmosphere. Beks has done the right things to make an outstanding restaurant that could flourish in Columbia, St. Louis, Kansas City, or even bigger cities. Head down the cobblestone streets and see where old and new explode into a marvelous experience.
P.S. By the way check out www.beksshop.com
