MidMoDiningGuide.com staffers were put to the challenge by our Facebook fans to try out 63 Diner for lunch and report back with our observations.

The Diner is located in on North Highway 763 in Columbia, which can be a hassle to get to, but this gem of a restaurant is worth making the trip for a family brunch. The vintage decorations will provide plenty of stories to tell the kiddos and the servers in poodle skirts will bring a smile to your face.

Like most diners, 63 boasts an array of greasy comfort foods that can only be found in that atmosphere. From burgers and chocolate malts to country fried steak and onion rings, everyone at the table will be sure to find something they like on the menu.

There was plenty of patrons when we arrived at noon, but the restaurant is much more spacious on the inside than Broadway Diner, so we didn't have to wait at all. Our server promptly took our order but the wait was a little long for a party of five (or maybe we were just so hungry it felt slower).

Prices vary because of the size of the menu, but all of us ordered from the sandwich list, which was between $5-$8--very reasonable for the amount of food you recieve. They also have dinner specials that are only a few dollars more than the lunch items.

Each of us ordered something different to taste, enjoy and experience for our readers. Here’s a summary of each of the menu items we tried, in each staffer's own words:

Country-Fried Club with Fries

63 Diner was delicious and fun!  With retro decor, great service and a full menu, the dining experience at 63 Diner was definitely enjoyable and one I would repeat.  63 Diner offers basic diner food (breakfast of eggs and biscuits and gravy, burgers, sandwiches, dinner plates with mashed potatoes and gravy, milk shakes and they make their own pie!  I ordered the Country-Fried Club that includes country-fried steak topped with bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. Served on a grilled Kaiser roll and comes with some of the best seasoned fries.  The sandwich was big enough for two meals and the prices were reasonable.

Chick's Twice Cooked Chicken Sandwich and Fries
Although I'm not usually an adventurous eater, I decided to go with this twice-cooked and teriyaki-dipped sandwich. The tangy teriyaki was an unexpected compliment to the chicken, and the flavor combo of cheddar cheese and fresh onion made the sandwich truly unique. It was a lot of flavor; if you don't love teriyaki, then you need to stay clear. I did have one bite off of the generous chicken breast portion that was mostly a fatty part and it tasted extra greasy. Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Fries and my much-loved ranch dressing were an excellent compliment to take a break from the strong flavor. Good portions for both sandwich and fries, nice service and a fun atmosphere.

Blue Moon Burger and Fries
I got it at first because I thought it had something to do with the beer of the same name! This burger tasted fine--It was topped with a combo of melted bleu and swiss cheese on a single patty. The fries were my favorite part, crispy, fresh and a large portion! It wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Cheese Burger and Onion Rings
The burger tasted very real, which is hard to find in our fast food, always processed nation. The melted cheddar cheese tasted great on the plain bun. It wasn’t the best burger I’ve ever had, but it definitely cured my hunger! The waitress forgot my onion rings so I got both a side of regular fries and onion rings to try with my order—I was stuffed! The fries were super crisp and salty, just how I like them. The onion rings were also tasty, think Sonic with more crunch. Overall, I was satisfied with my order and would definitely come back if I'm craving comfort food and an old-time atmosphere.
