My husband and I love this place but Mark, bring back the stout cake! Good food - good beer - good waitstaff - a fun place to go for a beer or a meal.

The food here is always fabulous! I've eaten many lunches at 44 Stone and have always had really great entrees. Their salads and house made dressings are also really wonderful. I crave the herb dressing! If I had to pick just one entree to recommend it would have to be the tandoori chicken. What a great sandwich! But always consider having the feature of the day. The atmosphere is great and the beer/cider selection is probably the best in town. Just watch out for the high powered alcohol content! I really enjoy going to this place. The dessert selections are good too. I do wish they would mix up the desserts some though. Sometimes you just want cheesecake.

This is Dave, the co-owner of 44 Stone Public House.
We'll make this as short as possible (as an old English major, this can be difficult for me). I don't agonize over reviews, but felt we should clear the air regarding a recent negative review and the response to it.
A member of my service staff was treated with disrespect by the 1-Star reviewer. I don't expect everyone to love our food; that is an unattainable goal. I expect human beings, Native English or otherwise, to treat others with respect. The one-star reviewer did NOT treat said respect with a server that is always liked and treats our guests with the utmost regard (regardless of whether they deserve it).
Bangers and Mash aside, I told the one-star reviewer to not come back (verbal abuse?)due to her attitude towards my dedicated staff. That is all.
I love my restaurant and will defend all who maintain its integrity.
Thanks to the 4-star reviewer who was honest (the Bangers and Mash isn't for everybody) and lent, at the very least, credibility, and at the most, praise of 44 Stone. We appreciate you.
By the way, as a side English-major based analysis, notice the VERY similar tone, meter, excessive us of commas, excessive/uneccesary after-comma capitalization, and general grammatical messiness of the original 1-star reviewers comment and the 'response to her being called out by the 4-star reviewer' comment. They might be two different people, but I was there, and only one guest left unhappy that day....
We hope all who visit 44 Stone for the first time come with their stomachs empty and minds clear of others' perception of the place. If you don't like it, I understand. Just be fair, honest and respectful.
(And, by the way, try the Bangers & Mash.)

LOL, Too Funny,
I was at the restaurant, the same day the poor lady was there that received verbal abuse from the manager, I sat next to her, She did not eat any of her meal so how could she be asking for it for free, I must admit, It was my first time there, and unfortnately, Food, fair, but a burger is a burger and I can get better, Good Luck 44 Stone

I've been here several times and the food is great. The bangers and mash wasn't for me but really.. Who cares? The rest of the menu I've tried is great and if you're in columbia frequently then you should absolutely check this place out.
And in regards to the 1-star reviewer looking for a 0 star. I was in the restaurant while she was there and this place could benefit from one less customer like her around. So take what she said with a grain of salt because she's the kind of person who expects her food for free if it doesn't meet their snooty expectations.

I looked for zero star, Maybe you should add it because begrudgingly, I have to give it 1 star,
As an english person, I was excited to try out 44 Stone, even though, friends and colleagues had advised me otherwise.
I was upset, when the entree I ordered off the menu, came looking nothing like what was described, After asking for gravy, which menu said was part of the entree, I was informed gravy is inside the pasty, upon cutting into this, I stared in disbelief at a gray dried lump of sausage meat, with not even a hint of onion gravy, After taking one taste and informing the server that it was too dry I sent the meal back and sat drinking my small $5.00 beer. At no point did I get an apology over the meal, and, upon receiving the check, they had the audacity to charge me for the entree that I did not even eat and promptly tutted when I asked that this be taken off the charge. Only at this point did a manager appear and ask me if when I have driven my car for ten thousand miles do I expect to take it back. Yes that is exactly what was asked. People trust me, British food has a bad rap as it is without this restaurant adding insult to injury.
The old saying is that when you have an enjoyable experience you just go back, however, when bad, you inform as many people as you possibly can, well people you have been informed.

Amazing time with good friends. The owners kept coming and checking on us to make sure we were happy with everything. They make their own bacon there... so of course I had a Cheeseburger with BACON. It was AMAZING!!!One of the best cheeseburgers I've ever had! Everyone sampled some different beers too and they have a HUGE selection... Definitely recommend 44 Stone for a good time, good food and good experience!

LOVE this place. Their cheeseburgers are the best. We've eaten there about 6 times and consistently had great service.

I think 44 Stone is really starting to get their act together, because I went with a large group on a Saturday night, we had an excellent time. We'd started out at Flatbranch, where we were told we'd have a minimum 2 hour wait, so we called up 44 Stone and the said they'd set us up in the cellar room. Lovely room, and our waiter was attentive, enthusiastic, and seemed to know a great deal about his menu (both food and drink). I had the Tandoori chicken sandwich and it was AMAZING. It's so hard for me to find a place that serves even one sandwich where I don't have to request something be left off or added for me to enjoy it, but I ordered this one as is and loved it. The cider selection was better than pretty much any other place I've been outside of a liquor store. Great time had by all, and I can't wait to go back with my husband.

My husband and I both thought 44 Stone Burger was the Best burger that we've ever had. The deviled eggs were an unexpected delight. I could have eaten the mushy peas all night! Kyle was an exceptional waiter. Pay him well! :-)

The service I recently received here was just unacceptable. Not only did our server not serve us (we had to get up to get her as she hung out and chatted with coworkers every single time we wanted something), the entire (on duty) wait/bar staff stood around drinking at the bar and carrying on while we sat with empty drinks. Our order was messed up, not surprisingly, and the way it was handled by either another server or manager was absolutely disrespectful and dismissive. I do not go out to dinner to get poor service and embarrassed by staff. There are too many dining options in Columbia for this sort of thing to be going on.

Recently ate at Stone 44. The appetizer we chose was below average, fixed with a stout beer it was a little bitter. The special was tremendous, beef with mashers. The wedge salad was wonderful and generous and we got it with salmon that was tasty. A great price for such a nice salad. The waiter hustled but we think they might have been a bit understaffed. We will return and see if this was just an unusually busy evening. The decor is very plain and uninspiring and it is dark. The food is good especially for the price. We did not get dessert. Counted 53 beers that they offer, some of them local. Would recommend for beer lovers. Prices are not bad. Can eat burgers for about 8 bucks. Nice casual place to eat. Would give it a try again.

After hearing good things from multiple friends (who don't know each other) my husband and I decided to check it out last night. Here's what we thought:
-Decor: The outside is strip mall, and nothing interesting. Inside: comfortable enough chairs and tables and booths. The board listing all the beers and "whiskeys and whiskys" is cool, big bar.
-Service: they were slammed on a Friday night when we got there, but were working hard. Not perfect service but certainly OK. The hostess and servers were all nice enough but maybe not the most professional.
-Food: Incredible. We shared the "lamb sliders" for our first course and loved them. My husband had the "pasty" and I had the sole special for entrees and they were unbelievably good. For dessert I got the bread pudding and my husband the flourless chocolate cake. The cake and pudding were so-so but the accompanying sauces were so good they should be bottled.
-Beer and Spirits:Very nice selection of beers, with some quality selections on tap, including a cider. We didn't try any of the whiskeys but were pleased to note the reasonable prices for future visits.
-Price: Very reasonable on beer, and while not the cheapest dinner in town, the quality of the food for the price was excellent.

This is the second time I have eaten here. The service was perfect! Our waiter was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. On this trip, I had the chicken special, which was to die for. It also came with apple cider slaw and truffle mac n cheese. We had lamb sliders for an appetizer, which were so moist and wonderful! I usually don't get dessert, but decided to since I've loved everything I've eaten here both times. I had the flourless chocolate cake that came with creme and blackberries. Awesome! The place may have had a rough opening from the previous reviews, but this is a place that you do not want to miss out on in Columbia. It is homemade food at its best!

I hate to give a bad review, but here we go.
I agree with the previous reviewer about first impressions. Maybe an isolated incident, but I won't be back.
It was Sat April 9th - my brother wanted a birthday steak and he picked the place to try it. He, his girlfriend and I had a seat on the patio and though there were ample waitresses and I made eye contact with several, 10 minutes passed before we flagged one down and asked for menus and to have the table wiped off.
That waitress was rude, but great, we were no longer invisible. She said she'd get someone for us.
After almost another 10 minutes, still, NO ONE stopped for us.
OK, this was almost 20 minutes. No water, no clean table, no menus, nothing.
We left. Not angry, not upset, but very disappointed. I wish 44 Stone the best, but they do not have their act together and it shows.
The fact I put my name on here shows I mean it.
On a separate note, we went to another restaurant nearby - one that frequent often - and had a wonderful steak and great evening. It was no doubt enhanced by the poor, poor service 44 stone offered.

I was very excited to hear of a euro-style pub being introduced to the south side of town, and anticipated having an alternative environment to enjoy a higher end scotch and play darts. Unfortunately, the dart room looked like an afterthought, with tables crowding the area and employees mingling with their friends who had come in to enjoy a drink. Ordered a lamb slider appetizer, which was overcooked, and over seasoned. Have since decided it best to stick to establishments which meet the expectations set by their pricing and atmosphere.
Quite possibly an isolated incident, but first impressions go a long way, and 44 Stone didnt give me one that i would consider revisiting.

This place needs a lot of work. The food was awful! The service was the slowest in Columbia! When I complained the owner/chef? was very rude. I will not be back!

Food was so so. Hard to mess up a salad. My guest got the burger and he said it was passable. Not great, but passable. I can safely say it's highly unlikely this place is gonna make it. They didn't change practically anything about Hemmingways except the beaded wall (which was important because without it there it was much more obvious that the place was dead).
The menu was weird, but so so for a theme restaurant. But there was only 10-20 items on the menu. They had their beer menu on the wall and I give it a week before someone runs their hand over it and wipes half it off.
Music was gimmicky, but I get it. It's supposed to be a theme "pub" restaurant. Didn't feel like a pub setting at all. More like a cafeteria at Busch Gardens.
Sign on the wall said "established 2011". Hope they have enough room left to put "unestablished 2012" because you don't have to be a fortune teller to see the future of this place.
Too bad too. Columbia needs a good Euro-Pub. This just won't be it.

had dinner here this evening. very pleasant experience. the service was average, but the beer list and food were superb. we'll be back.

It was ok but not great. Not sure the did enough to change the environment from Hemmingway's. I wish them luck but we probabily not be back too often.

Had lunch in the bar. Great service and tasty, unique food. I loved the homemade pretzel buns on my burger and the malt vinegar slaw was the best I've tasted...two thumbs up! Oh, and the prices are very reasonable!

Went for lunch. Our server was very friendly and the atmoshpere was nice. It is still hard to picture it as something other than Hemingways, though they did change it up a bit.
The food was good, although my wife had to wait for her food after everyone else had already gotten there plates. All-in-all it was a good experience and good food, not great, and probably not going to be a regular dining spot for us.
